Levofloxacin occurs as fluoroquinolone antibiotic, marketed by Ortho-McNeil under the marque Levaquin. Chemically, levofloxacin is the S-enantiomer (L-isomer) of ofloxacin.

Levofloxacin is efficacious against the total of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Because of its wide spectrum of action, levofloxacin is ofttimes prescribed by trial and error for the wide range of contagions (e.g. pneumonia, urinary tract sickness) prior to a specific causal organism is known. In case the causal organism is identified, levofloxacin is for instance discontinued & a patient can be switched to an antibiotic drug by using a narrower specturm
